THE LEGEND OF LABYRINTH
Housed within the Labyrinth was the Minotaur, a monster with the body of a man and the head of a bull. Each year, Athens was required to send seven youths and seven maidens o Crete as a sacritice to the Minotaur. Annually, a black ship with black sails set forth from Athens carrying the fourteen doomed Athenians to be devoured by the monster.
The Terrible Tribute continued for many years until Theseus, the son of King Aegeus, came of age and volunteered to join the cargo of youths and attempt to stop the sacrifice.
When they landed on Crete, King Minos daughter Ariadne fell in love with Theseus and decided to help him. At the gate of the Labyrinth she gave him a sword to slay the monster and a skein of silver cord to trace his way back to the entrance. With his companions holding one end of the cord, Theseus carefully threaded his way through the Labyrinth toward the center and the waiting Minotaur. In the ensuing great battle the monster was slain. The young hero followed the silver cord back through the dimly lit passages to his companions and Ariadne. The youths boarded their ship and returned to Athens where Theseus later became King.
Unknown to Theseus and his comrades, the fate of the victims was actually in the hands of Poseidon, god of Crete, and Athena, goddess of Athens. With a miniature labyrinth, on a board which tilted and a silver ball that rolled through the maze, the fate of the humans was decided. Athena\'s skill and wisdom helped her to guide the ball through the maze successfully, thus saving Theseus and ending the terrible tribute.
