This listing is for a Marilyn Andrews (American, 1942-2019) surreal modernist stoneware folk art cup and stand. This rare hand painted set is signed and dated to underside. It measures 5” high x 5.75” wide and is gently used with no discernible damage.
Marilyn Andrews was a self-taught
American studio potter and ceramic artist known for her hand-built stoneware pieces. Andrews began selling her work in 1976 and exhibited and won awards throughout the United States.
Her husband, Andrew Van Assche, is also a clay artist. She created figurative forms, such as teapots, cups, and bowls, often decorated with hand-painted faces and figures in blue and earthen tones. She focused on creating objects that embodied an image and could be a useful tool. Andrews passed away in 2019, but her work continues to be shown in galleries and sold at sale.
