Mark Anthony Whiten (born November 25, 1966, in Pensacola, Florida) is an American former professional baseball outfielder renowned for his powerful bat and exceptional throwing arm. A switch-hitter with notable power, he was nicknamed “Hard-Hittin’ Mark Whiten” during his major league tenure.

Whiten’s professional career began when the Toronto Blue Jays drafted him in the fifth round of the 1986 MLB Draft. After progressing through the minors, he made his major league debut with Toronto on July 12, 1990. Although talented, early inconsistency led to his trade to the Cleveland Indians, where he spent parts of two seasons refining his skills.

The most memorable chapter of Whiten’s career came with the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1993, he delivered one of the most historic offensive performances in MLB history: on September 7, he hit four home runs in a single game and drove in 12 runs, tying the all-time major league record for both categories in a game. This feat cemented his place in the record books and remains a signature moment of his career.

During that season, Whiten also showcased his exceptional arm in the outfield and posted solid overall numbers, including 25 homers and 99 RBIs. However, injuries in subsequent seasons limited his playing time and consistency.

Over his 11-year MLB career, Whiten played for eight different teams, including stints with the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and a second tenure with the Indians. He finished his major league playing days in 2000.

Whiten retired with a career batting average of .259, 105 home runs, and 423 RBIs, remembered most for his prodigious power and unforgettable single-game explosion that stands alongside the most remarkable offensive feats in baseball history
