The Martin Model 166 was a twin-engine monoplane bomber developed by Glenn L. Martin Company, serving as the final and most advanced export variant of the Martin B-10 series.Built primarily for the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Force (ML-KNIL), 82 units were produced, featuring a single long \"glass-house\" canopy, more powerful 1,000 hp Wright Cyclone engines, and an increased bomb load capacity of up to 2,000 kg (though this reduced range).
During World War II, these aircraft formed the backbone of the Dutch bomber force in the Dutch East Indies and were also used by Thailand (as Type 166 Th3).Despite being outclassed by modern Japanese fighters and lacking adequate fighter escort, they conducted hazardous reconnaissance and bombing missions in 1941–1942 across the archipelago and Malaya.The aircraft was eventually overwhelmed by superior enemy numbers, with most surviving units destroyed on the ground or in combat by early 1942.There was one Type 166 that escaped to Australia and flown in USAAF markings with the nosenose turrent faired over or fully retracted?It is shown in Air Enthusiast # 22
