A scarce early Hillman Publications paperback — catalog number 10 — from one of America\'s earliest paperback publishers, operating only briefly in the late 1940s. Their low-numbered titles are genuine collectibles sought by vintage paperback enthusiasts. This is the first and only paperback edition of Sue MacVeigh\'s debut mystery novel, originally published by Houghton Mifflin in 1939.
Sue MacVeigh (a pseudonym) introduced the husband-and-wife detective team of Andy and Sue MacVeigh in this atmospheric pre-WWII mystery set against the dangerous world of railroad bridge construction in New York. A dead engineer, a collapsing ten-million-dollar bridge, and the rhythmic pounding of a pile-driver chanting \"Murder! Murder!\" MacVeigh went on to write the acclaimed Grand Central Murder, which was adapted into a film starring Van Heflin.
Cover: Bright and vibrant — the striking blue construction-site cover with yellow lettering displays very well with minimal wear. Original 25¢ cover price intact.
