Early "wife-swapping" or swinging in California originated in the 1950s and early 1960s, quickly spreading from Southern California to cities like San Francisco. In the beginning, these gatherings were discreet, invitation-only meetups held in private members' homes. By 1972, the movement had evolved as social scientist Gilbert Bartell estimated that nearly half a million American couples were involved inorganizedswinging.
