THREE CENTS on 6 cent (\'View of Upper Steadies\' - Humber River issue of 1923-24) surcharged provisional issued on August 23,1929 due to a shortage of 3 cent stamps when Perkins, Bacon and Co. took over the printing contract and had to re-engrave the 1928 definatives. Surcharging was done in St. John\'s by D.R. Thistle - ie. Trade Printers and Publishers Ltd. Perf 14.0x13.7 (there are 2 perf varieties recorded to date). Excellent color and appearance, well centered. Mint, never-hinged original gum. Downward shifted surcharge so that the bottom bar is below and therefore does not strike through either of the 6 cent numerals. Misplaced surcharge varieties are listed in the 2023 edition of the Walsh Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue as 161c with a catalogue value of $140.00 USD in mint, never-hinged condition. These are all shifted upward. The stamp being offered here is the first one I have seen with the surcharge shifted downward.
