Nevada US Route 50 marker.
Up for sale today is this Nevada US Route 50 sign. Made to the exact 1928 state standard, as used between then and 1939 along this famous highway.
US Highway 50 is the Lincoln Highway in Nevada, as it comes down from the US 40 corridor out of Utah. It is today also known as the Loneliest Road in America, for having such an extremely low traffic count: most everyone takes Interstate 80, a few hundred miles to the north, these days.
An original of these, complete with the state-outline logo of the Nevada State Department of Highways, is very hard to come by. This sign style was the among first ever US route markers ever posted in Nevada, as the highway department alternated between the porcelain and the embossed styles up to about 1939 or so. Only the porcelain signs got the distinct state-outline logo. They were retired from the roads of Nevada long ago, with most of them being destroyed and only a few examples circulating on the collector's market, where they easily run many thousands of dollars. So here's your chance to get your hands on a fantastic display piece...without breaking the bank.
The sign is 12 by 11 inches, and weighs 3 lb. 11 oz.
This is a high quality, heavy steel replica sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close!
