Mental Arithmetic. In S. Rachinsky\'s Free School, painted in 1895, depicts pupils working through an arithmetic problem in a rural classroom. The teacher at left is Sergey Rachinsky, whose educational work provided the setting for the scene. The blackboard, crowded group of students, wooden interior, and differing poses of concentration organize the painting around the act of collective problem solving. The work is held by the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
