21 years in the making and Noah Webster’s masterwork, this landmark publication was not only the first American dictionary but it was also the first work to recognize and define “American English.”
Webster was the first American to realize that the former American colonies of Britain needed their own language to give names to objects, qualities, and actions peculiar to themselves.
The dictionary included some 12,000 terms that had not appeared in any previous English work.
In addition to newly coined words, Webster was responsible for our retention of a pronunciation that is more consistent with spelling and etymology than the “King’s English.”
According to Mario Pei, “It is more probable that we owe it to him if American English sounds more comprehensible and less baffling to non-English speakers than does the British variety.”
