Noel Espinoza (Mexican, 1931–2014)
Portrait of a Campesino, oil on canvas
Signed lower right "N. Espinoza"
A bust-length portrait of a working man in a woven straw hat, a cream shirt, and a cloth knotted over one shoulder. Espinoza models the face carefully and treats the clothing in broad, loose strokes, so the figure fades into a pale, heavily textured ground. The palette is limited to ochres, umbers, and creams. The direct, unidealized gaze places the work in the 20th-century Mexican tradition of portraying rural laborers with dignity rather than as picturesque types, a subject Espinoza returned to throughout his career.
The painting is housed in a heavy carved wood frame in the Spanish Revival style, with a wire-brushed dark finish and a repeating relief pattern.
