Norway 1863 Coat of Arms 2sk Yellow Brown - Used, Faults
Single stamp, used. The seated lion with axe design in yellow-brown, cancelled with a bold manuscript/pen cancel in black crossing the face diagonally. Centering is fair to good. Perforations intact on three sides - right side shows one short perf. Front presents reasonably well for age.
Back is heavily damaged: large tear running across the upper portion, with associated paper loss and a thin extending into the center of the stamp. Ink bleed-through from the cancel visible. Small paper fold/crease at lower right edge. This is a space-filler copy only.
Historical Note:
Norway\'s second stamp issue, the Coat of Arms series was issued in 1863, replacing the first Skilling issues of 1855. The design features the Norwegian lion rampant holding the axe of St. Olav - a design rooted in medieval heraldry. Denominated in skilling, Norway\'s pre-decimal currency, these stamps predate the switch to the ore/krone system in 1877. Genuinely 160+ year old material.
