49 PERIOD IMAGES – IDENTIFIED PEOPLE – CIVIL WAR MILITARY – CDVs – TINTYPESOffered as found is an original Victorian photograph album containing 49 distinct period images dating approximately from the 1860s through the 1880s.The album contains approximately 47 photographic images (including CDVs/card photographs/tintypes and related period photographs) plus 2 period printed/engraved portraits.IMPORTANT IDENTIFIED CIVIL WAR PORTRAIT:JAMES RICHARD SLACK (1818–1881)
A period engraved portrait in the album has been positively identified through documentary research as James Richard Slack, Union Brigadier General and Brevet Major General, U.S. Volunteers.
His signature is on the same photo page but has been folded under to fit into the album slot.Slack commanded the 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and participated in major Civil War operations including Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Vicksburg, Mansfield and Fort Blakeley. The portrait bears the Philadelphia imprint of GALAXY PUBLISHING CO. Research connects it to the 1874 \"Biographical Encyclopaedia of Pennsylvania of the Nineteenth Century,\" which contains a biography of James R. Slack and portrait plates. The engraving also carries the H.B. Hall & Sons, 62 Fulton St., New York imprint.SECOND CIVIL WAR MILITARY CDV – CURRENTLY UNIDENTIFIED:One particularly important original CDV depicts an older Union officer in a double-breasted military frock coat, wearing small wire spectacles and a full gray beard. The reverse is clearly marked:F.
