Original 1837 Handwritten Booklet - Advanced Geometry relating to Surveying
By Amos F. Slaymaker (1755 - 1837) of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
\'Surveying - Practical Rules of Solving all the Basis of Plain Geometry\'
I\'ve called it \'Advanced\' geometry because it is, to me ... perhaps to a surveyor or a mathematician it\'s pretty basic stuff. However, I\'m sure Amos\' work here has some historical interest to some serious members of the profession.
Amos himself, is a bit of a mystery. He had a distinguished legal career and wound up in Congress but I can find no evidence that he was ever a surveyor or a mathematician. But there\'s little doubt about his identity. He\'s the only Amos F. Slaymaker living in Lancaster County in 1837. (that I could find) The thing that concerns me about the identity of the author is the fact that he died in 1837 (the year this was written) at age 82, and this fine script doesn\'t look like it came from the hand of an eighty-two year old man! Go figure.
Amos F. did have a son, also named Amos, who would fit this time frame (born 1791, died 1856) but his middle name was Henderson and there\'s no mistaking the signatures on the geometry papers - Amos F. Slaymaker).
The pic of Amos F. Slaymaker is captured from Google Images.
Edited Bio taken from the \'History, Arts and Archives - US House of Representatives\'SLAYMAKER, Amos F. - A Representative from Pennsylvania; born in London Lands, Lancaster County, Pa., on March 11, 1755. Built and operated a hotel on the Lancaster and Philadelphia pike. During the Revolutionary War served as an ensign in the company of Capt. John Slaymaker. Justice of the peace of Salisbury Township. County commissioner 1806-1810. Served in the State senate in 1810 and 1811. Elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth Congress and served from October 11, 1814, to March 3, 1815. Died in Salisbury, Lancaster County, Pa., June 21, 1837.____________________The booklet is in very good condition. The front cover has a discoloration on the left edge caused by that part being exposed to light while the rest of the cover was covered up by something. Perhaps in an attic for many, many years. All of the remaining pages are in very good condition with no tears or damages. I\'ve scanned a few at random. The overall size is 12-1/2\" x 8\" The pages were a little too long for my scanner so the bottom inch or so doesn\'t show in the pics).Item will be shipped free and insured by USPS first class mail.
Note: I have additional similar handwritten papers by Amos, also some by another member of the Slaymaker family dated as early as 1811. All relating to geometry and surveying. I\'d be happy to answer any questions if anyone is interested.
