Excellent oil portrait on canvas of a lovely woman, wearing an attractive brooch or Croix de Guerre, in a dark setting and against a dark background.
There’s a faint image of a weathervane at upper right in the painting, of unknown significance.
The area of the canvas on which the woman’s face is painted is tastefully curved outward a touch, which gives the portrait a deeper, very slight 3-D effect.
We could not find a signature on the front. The artist’s name appears on the back in pencil (see photos). The subject looks French, or of other Mediterranean ancestry, we suppose.
A WWI heroine? Perhaps. A private portrait? We don’t know. Do you know her?
