When Ulysses S. Grant died in 1885, America was left in mourning. Never mind that his presidency was in the end riddled with corruption and recession. Everyone rememberd the Hero of the North & Savior of the Union. Memorial biographies, autobiographies, souvenir booklets, and picture books like this one popped up and were devoured by the public.
Josephine Pollard (1834-1892) was an acclaimed author of children\'s stories, with a preference for Biblical history and American history. She is noted for her direct style of writing, neither talking above children\'s heads nor down to them. In fact, some of her descriptions of battles and suffering in this book of General Grant\'s Civil War achievements are sobering: \"Poor beasts [animals] lay dead in all the camp streets. Men died of their wounds, who might have got well if they had had the right kind of care.\" Because of her ability to speak plainly & directly to children, Pollard\'s work has been rediscovered in modern times through home-schooling.
This fascinating biography of General Grant is enhanced by dozens of well-done engravings that show the range of excitement, terror, drudgery, sorrow, and sometimes even beauty of Civil War life & battlefields.

VG Antiquarian with repair. The bottom corner of the back cover had been torn off in antiquity. It has been repaired with modern stock and a nice facsimile of the original image. It\'s strong, sturdy, and whole again. Very attractive on a shelf or coffeetable, and very easy & enjoyable to look through.
