This is a beautifully framed pair of copper plate etchings from “Raccolta di Pitture d’ Ercolano”,published between 1752 & 1762 of artifacts from Herculaneum. Herculaneum was totallyburied in a superheated pyroclastic flow of lava from Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. One of theetchings had a crack in the glass, so when it was replaced a photo was taken of the etchingagainst a light showing the hand laid paper and watermark. The plate marks measure about13 5/8”x 10 3/4, the windows in the mats are 14 1/4”x 10 1/4” and both etchings are in verygood condition. They are in identical frames that have some minor dings and scratches,measuring 22”x 17 3/4”. Shop
