The South African Air Force\'s \"Flying Cheetahs\" squadron, officially 2 Squadron SAAF, operated the Dassault Mirage III from the early 1960s through the 1980s. These delta-wing fighters were central to South Africa\'s air combat capability during the Border War. The Mirage III was used for interception, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions, often upgraded with local modifications to extend its operational relevance. The Flying Cheetahs earned a reputation for skill and professionalism, flying daring low-level missions and engaging in air combat against regional adversaries. The squadron later transitioned to the Cheetah, a heavily modernized Mirage III derivative developed in South Africa.
Dassault Mirage IIICZ Designed to meet a French government specification for a lightweight, all-weather interceptor, the Dassault Mirage III was first flown on November 17, 1956. This supersonic aircraft has a tailless delta wing configuration and is capable of high speeds (a Mirage IIIA was the first European aircraft to exceed Mach 2 in level flight). It has a provision for a SEPR liquid-fuel rocket engine, which provides additional burst thrust. In production for over a decade, the Mirage III is considered one of Europe\'s most successful military aircraft designs, serving 20 different nations, some of whom still fly it today.
