With notes of various authors by Thomas Newton, D.D., Lord Bishop of Bristol. A lovely two volume set of the English poet John Milton\'s \"Paradise Lost\", an epic poem concerning biblical narratives primarily from the Book of Genesis. A literary masterpiece, Paradise Lost has influenced many subsequent writers and artists, and is considered second only in the English language to the works of William Shakespeare. In total, there are 12 engravings, 6 in each volume. Additionally, this edition has an index, the essay \"A Critique upon the Paradise Lost\" by Mr Addison, a brief biography of John Milton, a dedication to William Pulteney, 1st Earl of Bath, notes and commentary on each page, and \"In Paradisum Amissam\" a Latin commendatory poem written by Dr. Samuel Barrow (with an English translation).
Condition: The books are in very good condition. Brown calf binding is nice, minimal wear, some spots/rubbing. Minor cracking to spine, gilt lettering and decorations largely intact. Hinges starting. Pages are overall excellent, minimal foxing and yellowing. Bookplate of prior owner ( B. C. Browne) on front pastedown. Without collating, all pages appear to be present. See photos for more detail.
