Paul Chidlaw (1900–1989) was a pioneering Cincinnati modernist and an early and influential figure in Abstract Expressionism in the Midwest. Born in Cleves, Ohio, he studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati before traveling to Europe, where he studied in Paris under artists including André Lhote. He returned to Cincinnati and taught at the Art Academy for many years, influencing generations of local artists. Despite severe macular degeneration late in life, Chidlaw continued to create art daily, increasingly working with bold black-and-white forms and relying on his peripheral vision. His work is represented in collections including the Cincinnati Art Museum, Xavier University and numerous private collections.
