Collectible Original Paul Plaschke signed watercolor drawing cartoon or caricature depicting Nate Goldblatt smoking a cigar while watering a 'Goldblatt's' Potted plant with ten flowers, each representing one of his stores, with $ signs, c. 1940’s. Signed and inscribed lower right "To Nathan Goldblatt With Best Wishes Plaschke" with his signature baby character. Frame measures 19" high x 17 1/4" wide, the paper frame size is 13 3/4" x 12". The drawing is in very good vintage condition, no staining or discoloration, the frame and matte have wear and need adjusting, piece is loose in frame, please see all photos

Goldblatt's was an American chain of local discount stores that operated in Chicago, Illinois, as well as Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Goldblatt's was founded in 1914 by brothers Nate and Maurice Goldblatt. Immigrants from Poland, the Goldblatt family ran a grocery store and butcher shop on Chicago's West Side. Nate and Maurice opened their first store near the corner of Ashland and Chicago Avenue. By 1922, the store recorded sales of over $800,000. By 1946 Goldblatt's was operating 15 stores with $62 million in annual sales. Though the picture is not dated, it was most likely created prior to 1946 when only 10 stores existed.
