Here is a standout piece for any ’80s music fan or serious record collector: an original No Jacket Required album personally signed by Phil Collins. This is the record that turned Collins from respected Genesis frontman and solo artist into one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, and having his autograph on the classic orange-and-neon cover makes it a trophy-level item that belongs front and center in any collection.

The signature is executed in blue felt-tip ink directly across Collins’ forehead on the front cover—a bold, unmistakable autograph placement that makes this piece instantly eye-catching. The album is an original 1985 Atlantic Records U.S. pressing (catalog #81240), vinyl LP, stereo specialty pressing, still in its original shrink wrap. The autograph has been professionally examined and authenticated by GFA Authenticators (GFAA No. 49468, examined April 5, 2023), who compared it against three known exemplar signatures and confirmed it is genuine and authentic. All characteristics—style, slant, spacing, line quality, stroke formations, and idiosyncratic features—were found to be consistent with known authentic Collins signatures.

Philip David Charles Collins was born on January 30, 1951, in Chiswick, London. He first picked up drumsticks at age five and attended drama school as a child, landing the role of the Artful Dodger in the West End production of Oliver! and even appearing as an extra in the Beatles’ film A Hard Day’s Night. After playing with several bands as a teenager, Collins won the drummer’s seat in Genesis in 1970, eventually stepping up to lead vocals when Peter Gabriel departed in 1975.

Under Collins’ direction, Genesis evolved into a chart-topping mainstream act, scoring massive hits with albums like Invisible Touch. Simultaneously, he launched a solo career in 1981 with Face Value, which featured the iconic “In the Air Tonight.” By mid-decade, Collins was arguably the most ubiquitous musician on Earth. His 1985 album No Jacket Required became his commercial zenith, and that same year he became the only artist to perform at both the London and Philadelphia stages of Live Aid, flying between them on the Concorde.

Between Genesis and his solo work, Collins has sold more than 250 million records worldwide. He won multiple Grammys, an Academy Award for Best Original Song (“You’ll Be in My Heart” from Disney’s Tarzan), a Golden Globe, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Genesis in 2010. His final live performance took place on March 26, 2022, at London’s O2 Arena during Genesis’ “The Last Domino?” farewell tour.

Now 75 and living in Miami, Collins is fully retired from the stage. Nerve damage from a 2007 spinal surgery has progressively robbed him of the ability to drum and walk unaided. These health realities, combined with his retirement, mean that new autographed pieces from Collins are becoming genuinely scarce—making authenticated signatures from his prime all the more desirable to collectors.

About the Album

Released on February 18, 1985, No Jacket Required was Phil Collins’ third solo studio album and his most successful by far. It shot to No.1 on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart, spending seven weeks at the top in America and five in Britain. The album spun off four massive U.S. Top 10 singles: “Sussudio” and “One More Night” both reached No.1 on the Hot 100, “Don’t Lose My Number” hit No.4, and “Take Me Home” climbed to No.7.

Produced by Collins and Hugh Padgham, the album marked a deliberate shift toward uptempo, dance-oriented pop after the more ballad-heavy tone of his earlier solo work. It features guest backing vocals from Peter Gabriel, Sting, and Helen Terry. With more than 25 million copies sold worldwide and RIAA Diamond certification in the United States (12 million copies sold domestically), it remains one of the best-selling albums of all time. It earned Collins three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male.

In September 2025, a 40th-anniversary boxed set titled No Jacket Required (Fully Tailored) was released, featuring new Steven Wilson stereo, 5.1 surround, and Dolby Atmos mixes—a testament to the album’s enduring cultural significance four decades on.
