Complete Two-Volume Set
Impressive large-format 19th-century illustrated work depicting the landscapes, cities, landmarks, architecture, and scenery of America.
Both volumes are extensively illustrated, including numerous beautiful full-page steel engravings as well as a large number of wood engravings and illustrations throughout the text. Subjects include American cities, rivers, mountains, waterfalls, historic locations, landscapes, and other notable scenery.
Based on inspection, the engravings appear to be present. Please see the photographs for examples of the extensive illustrations contained throughout both volumes.
The books are substantial oversized volumes measuring approximately 13 x 11 inches each.
Detailed Condition
These are approximately 150-year-old books with significant binding problems, and the condition should be carefully considered before purchase.
Both volumes show heavy exterior wear, including rubbing, leather deterioration and loss, worn joints, spine wear, and worn edges and corners.
Volume I: The front board is still attached but is weak. The binding is also weak/loose through portions of the beginning of the volume, affecting some pages in that area. Volume I has noticeable foxing in places.
Volume II: The front board is completely detached. A following section/group of pages is also completely detached, as clearly photographed. Volume II appears to have considerably less foxing than Volume I.
The interiors are substantially better preserved than the exterior bindings. Pages show age-related toning, scattered spotting/foxing, occasional staining, edge wear, small tears, and other signs of age and use. All of the engravings remain very attractive.
These books are fragile and should be handled with care, particularly around the weakened and detached areas.
Please examine all photographs carefully. The photographs are an important part of the condition description and show the bindings, detached components, page condition, foxing, title and publication information, and numerous examples of the engravings and illustrations.
Shipping
Due to the large size, substantial weight, and fragile condition of these antique volumes, the two books will be carefully packed and shipped in TWO SEPARATE PACKAGES. This is intentional to avoid placing both heavy volumes in a single box and to provide safer protection during transit.
Each volume will be individually protected and packed with care.
