This is a beautiful terracotta head fragment representing the iconic Sonriente (Smiling Face) tradition of ancient Mesoamerica. Emerging from the Late Classic Period, these rare visages are uniquely celebrated for breaking away from the strict, solemn conventions of Pre-Columbian art to capture a lively, open-mouthed expression of joy, music, or ritual celebration.
This specimen features a highly detailed, wide horizontal headdress adorned with deeply incised, authentic Classic Veracruz interlocking scrollwork and stylized zoomorphic avian/serpent profiles.
Very good condition overall. The horizontal span remains largely intact with crisp, sharp relief patterns on the headband.
Has been in my family for several decades. Unsure if this is authentic or replica, if I was absolutely sure it was authentic it would be listed for thousands.
