Known for pioneering vibrant color printing in children\'s books, McLoughlin Bros. beautifully embellished this edition with \"Fifty Illustrations in Oil Colors\" (chromolithographs). The book contains nearly one hundred moral rhymes and verses, including charming period pieces like \"The Field Daisy,\" \"The Care of Birds,\" and \"Good Little Fred.\"
This particular copy features a stunning, uncommon textured red cloth variant with an ornate black-and-gold stamped front cover and a central pasted-down color illustration. It also includes a fascinating touch of New England history with a vintage ownership label inside the front cover from \"Mrs. J. • Cover & Binding: Good antiquarian condition. The original red cloth boards show beautiful, bright gold gilt and black stamping on the front cover. The back cover features matching, crisp blind-stamping.
• Spine & Corners: There is visible shelf wear, including fraying and small material chipping at the top and bottom of the spine, as well as moderate rubbing/softening to the corners and hinges. The binding remains structurally intact with original stitching visible at the gutters.
• Interior Pages: Remarkably clean for a children\'s book of this age. The pages have light, age-appropriate toning, minor finger-soil at the margins, and faint foxing (spotting) on the endpapers, but there are no modern crayon marks, scribbles, or torn/missing pages. The chromolithograph illustrations remain vibrant, sharp, and beautifully preserved.
