A spectacular and highly decorative antique centerpiece by Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF), Germany, executed in the fashionable Japonisme / Japanese-inspired style of the late 19th century.
The piece features extraordinary sculptural decoration throughout, including a seated Japanese musician, flowering sakura/cherry blossom branches, birds and dramatic mythical dragon-like creatures integrated into the handles and body. The three-dimensional applied decoration gives the piece an almost sculptural, jewelry-like quality.
The underside is clearly marked WMF / EP. Period WMF references identify EP as electroplated, and this style of WMF export marking is associated with approximately 1895–1903 production.
