Rare French copper jeton dated 1713, issued for physician Philippe Hecquet during his tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Paris under King Louis XIV.
One side bears the historic arms of the Faculty of Medicine: three storks carrying branches beneath a radiant sun, surrounded by “URBI ET ORBI” (“To the city and the world”). The opposite side depicts a serpent ascending a rocky mountain toward the Temple of Aesculapius beneath “MONSTRAT ITER” (“It shows the way”). Engraved by Norbert Roettiers.
This exceptionally well-preserved example retains remarkably sharp design and inscription detail for a copper jeton more than 300 years old. CGB assigns the type an R2 rarity designation.
