Historical Appeal

This book represents the kind of compact medical reference a 19th-century physician could carry or keep close at hand. The title page describes it as a practical guide for the homoeopathic treatment of acute diseases, reflecting the popularity of homeopathic medicine in Victorian America.

The personalized gilt doctor’s name makes this copy especially appealing. Rather than a plain surviving medical text, this example has direct physician ownership provenance, with both a gilt-stamped M.D. name on the cover and a second doctor’s inscription inside.

Condition

Antique condition with significant age-related wear. The leather binding shows rubbing, scuffing, edge wear, corner loss, surface wear, and deterioration from age. The gilt title and gilt doctor name remain visible and attractive. Interior pages show toning, foxing, handling wear, and antique paper aging. Binding is intact but should be handled carefully due to age and wear. Please review all photos for the best representation of condition.

Collector Interest

A strong piece for collectors of antique medical books, homeopathy, Boericke & Tafel publications, Victorian medicine, physician-owned books, Pennsylvania medical history, and 19th-century leather bindings.

A scarce and historically interesting 1874 physician-owned homeopathic medical book with custom gilt doctor provenance.
