Maker: Automotive Service Co., Honolulu, Hawaii

Licensed by: A. G. Cox

Patent: U.S. 2,098,701, November 9, 1937

Serial: 527, in red on the label

Type: Soprano ukulele, double coconut body

Country: Hawaii, USA

Era: circa 1938–1941

Condition: Used, as Cocoanut Ukulele, made in Honolulu under U.S. patent 2,098,701. The original paper label inside the soundhole reads Cox’s Cocoanut Ukulele, Patent No. 2,098,701, patented November 9, 1937, manufactured by Automotive Service Co., Honolulu, Hawaii, licensed by A. G. Cox. The red serial number on the label is 527.

Anthony G. Cox, born on Maui, developed this double-coconut body in the mid-1930s. He joined two coconut shells into a figure-8, covered the seam with a wooden ring, and fitted a wooden top shaped like a standard ukulele. He first called it a Kokolele, then a Cocolele. The patent was granted November 9, 1937. Cox and his brother briefly ran Cox Brothers Cocolele & Curio Mfgrs. in Honolulu, then licensed the design. Automotive Service Co. and Pacific Mfg. & Sales Co., both in Honolulu, built the licensed instruments. Output was small, and it largely ended when World War II began, which is why a labeled example is a scarce Hawaiian collectible rather than an

ordinary souvenir coconut uke.

This one has the two coconut shells, the wooden joining ring, a worn painted wooden top, a wooden bridge, four friction pegs, and the original label. It is offered as found. The top paint is heavily alligatored and flaked. The shells show normal age scratches. Strings are present but not set up to play. No case. Not cleaned, repaired, or restored.

Sold as is, as found. No returns for condition issues visible in the photos. Please look at every photo, including the label. Shipping will be packed carefully. This is a fragile vintage instrument.

Condition report

Cox’s Cocoanut Ukulele, serial 527. Automotive Service Co., Honolulu, licensed by A. G. Cox. Inspected from photographs only. Not played, not opened beyond the soundhole view, and not measured with calipers.

Overall. Complete and together. As found, uncleaned, and unrestored. Honest age and wear. No case.

Label. Original paper label is still glued inside the body and readable through the soundhole. Text includes Cox’s Cocoanut Ukulele, Patent No. 2,098,701, patented November 9, 1937, manufactured by Automotive Service Co., Honolulu, Hawaii, licensed by A. G. Cox. Red serial number 527 is present. Label is soiled, foxed, and slightly lifted at the edges, but not missing.

Top. Wooden figure-8 top with an old white or cream paint finish. Paint is heavily alligatored, crazed, and flaked across most of the surface, with bare wood showing through. Reddish undercolor or stain shows at the edges and in the flake pattern. Soundhole is round and intact. No obvious open crack running off the soundhole was visible, but the paint loss could hide a hairline. Not confirmed sound.

Bridge. Original-looking wooden bridge is present, seated on the top, with string slots. It looks dry and unfinished. Strings pass over it. No missing saddle piece beyond the simple bar bridge this model uses.

Back and shells. Two coconut shells, joined by the wooden center ring Cox’s patent describes. Shells are intact, with normal scratches, fiber lines, and scuffs. No hole or crushed area seen. Wooden rim where the top meets the shells is present and continuous in the photos.

Neck and fretboard. Neck is straight in the photos. Fretboard is worn, dry, and unfinished-looking. Frets are present. Fret wear and level were not measured. Nut area is worn.

Headstock and tuners. Headstock outline is intact, with no chewed or broken wings. All four friction pegs are present. Buttons look like aged bone or a similar hard material, stained and dusty, set in dark bushings with slotted screws. They were not tested for slip.

Strings. Four strings are on the instrument. At least one is loose or broken off the tuner. Not in playing setup.

Not noted. No case, extra pegs, modern repairs, cleats, or added geared tuners visible.

Sold as is, as found. Condition shows cosmetic wear and age, not a broken instrument, but treat itas a collectible display piece unless a player sets it a long-time seller with 100% positive response and 5-star performance.
