Rare 1965 Lot Of 9 Original Color Jazz Slides BENNY GOLSON Quintet SLUGS NYC: $300.00
Up for sale is an extraordinarily rare, historically significant archive of nine (9) original 1965 35mm color Ektachrome slides documenting a live performance by the legendary Benny Golson Quintet at the infamous Slugs\' Saloon in New York City. These slides are unique, one-of-a-kind originals (OOAK) captured on September 4, 1965, by documented Philadelphia-born illustrator and photographer Jon Henry. Henry’s work from this era is celebrated for capturing the vanguard of the 1960s jazz movement with an artistic, immediate sensibility.Historical Significance & Content:Slugs\' Saloon (located at 242 East 3rd Street in Manhattan\'s Alphabet City) was a notoriously gritty, sawdust-covered dive bar that hosted the absolute giants of jazz. Because of the venue\'s dark interior and rough neighborhood reputation, high-quality color photography of the space and its performers is exceptionally scarce. This 9-slide archive includes: - Benny Golson: Vibrant, close-up, dramatic performance profiles of the legendary tenor saxophonist and composer mid-solo.
- Curtis Fuller: Live action shots featuring the master trombonist performing alongside Golson.
- Richard Davis & Rhythm Section: Dynamic shots featuring premier avant-garde bassist Richard Davis with his upright bass adjacent to the drum kit.
- The Original Kodak Box: The winning buyer will also receive the original, vintage yellow-and-orange cardboard Kodak processing box featuring handwritten archival notes logging the date, lineup, and venue.
Condition Notes:The slides are housed in their authentic, period-correct cardboard mounts. As is characteristic of 1960s Kodak Ektachrome film stocks, the transparencies have naturally aged to a heavy, beautiful magenta/pink color cast. This tint creates a striking, avant-garde, psychedelic visual aesthetic that perfectly captures the moody, fiery atmosphere of 1965 post-bop New York jazz. The film emulsion remains intact; mounts show minor edge wear consistent with 60-year-old archival storage.Note: This listing is for the purchase of the physical vintage slide artifacts. No transfer of commercial copyright or reproduction licensing rights is implied.A Holy Grail for Jazz Archivists Thank you for looking!
