Rare Edo Period Japanese Antique Ebi-Jo (Shrimp Lock) with Key – Tested & Working

This is an antique Japanese Ebi-Jo (海老錠 / Shrimp Lock) dating from the Edo period.

Ebi-Jo is a traditional type of Japanese lock that has been used for centuries to secure gates, storehouses (kura), traditional storage chests (nagamochi), and other valuable possessions.

The name “Ebi-Jo,” literally meaning “shrimp lock,” is said to come from its distinctive curved shape resembling a shrimp.

During the Edo period, these locks served not only as practical security devices but were also appreciated for their craftsmanship and decorative qualities.

This example features an impressive sculptural form with detailed traditional Japanese metalwork and comes with its key.

Condition

The lock has been tested and the locking/unlocking mechanism is working.

Due to its considerable age, there are scratches, oxidation, discoloration, patina, surface wear, and other signs of age and use.

These characteristics are consistent with an antique Japanese metal object of this age and contribute to its historical appearance.

The item is sold as-is in its current condition.

Please carefully examine all photographs before purchasing, as the photographs form an important part of the description.

* Lock: 11 cm (4.33 in) wide
