Red Auerbach Signed #2 Jersey Retirement Ceremony Ticket — January 4, 1985 — JSA Full LOA
On January 4, 1985, the Boston Celtics retired the #2 jersey honoring Red Auerbach at Boston Garden in a ceremony against the New York Knicks. This is the actual ticket from that night — signed by Auerbach himself on the front in blue fiber-tip marker.
The ticket measures 1½\" x 4¾\" and was manufactured by Globe Ticket Co. It is in excellent condition consistent with its age.
Why this piece is significant: By the time of this ceremony, Auerbach had already presided over 9 NBA championships as head coach and 6 more as General Manager/President — 15 total, the most in NBA history at that point. He would add one more in 1986 for a record 16. The ceremony took place during the Bird/McHale/Parish dynasty era, mid-season of the year the Celtics would win the championship. Auerbach passed away in 2006, making signed material from his later years increasingly finite — and a ticket signed from his own retirement ceremony is a particularly rare configuration. The subject of the ceremony signed the ceremony ticket itself.
