ROCKY WHILE TRAINING IN 1953 FOR JERSEY JOE WALCOTT IN HOLLAND, MICHIGAN
This type 1 snapshot photo, AND ORIGINAL 4X5 NEGATIVE, of Rocky Marciano originates from the estate of Ted Cheff, owner of Holland Furnace company in Holland, Michigan. The company was founded in 1908 and employed residents in and around Holland, Michigan for decades. Ted Cheff, the founders son, sponsored Marciano in his Heavyweight Champion years. Marciano set his training camp up in Holland for the Jersey Joe Walcott fight in 1953. Ted Cheff ordered construction of a pavilion, training ring, indoor training facility and housing for the Marciano camp. 100s of spectators were there daily along with dignitaries and celebrities. Marciano went on successfully defend his title against Walcott and stayed close friends with Ted Cheff for many years to come, exchanging handwritten letters and greetings and in person visits.
All photos and original negatives measure 4x5 inches and were taken by Holland Furnace officially staff photographer where they then remained with the company and family for the next 70 years.
