Theeffectiveness isdue to the extreme lightness of the “Rolling Log” at weighing just under 2oz., ourlog is 2 – 4 oz. less than the weight of the average mouse. When the mouse steps onto the Log, the coefficientof friction between the axle bushing and the axle is such that the mouse doesnot feel any movement in the Log and thus feels secure in their footing in orderto access the Log. When the mouse turns around slowly/ or turnssideways to perch and eat, the mouse’s center of gravity extends beyond the circumferenceof the Log. The torque exerted onto theroller by the mouse’s feet, off sets the “moment of inertia” of the mouse/logsystem (a quantity expressing a body’s tendency toresist angular acceleration. It is thesum of the products of the mass of each particle in the body with the square ofits distance from the axis of rotation) and the mousestarts its free fall into the bucket.
