Roman Protectorate AE 20 Macedonia 168-167 BC, POSEIDON, REPUBLIC, VERY RARE, VF For Sale

A VERY RARE coin with less than 10 currentlyknown; it is unclear if the deity on the obverse is Zeus or Poseidon as thereare so few of these in existence; Forum Ancient Coins has this listed asPoseidon and I tend to agree; Forum also notes the mint as possibly Heralcea Lynciwhich would be a mobile military mint; as of the time of this listing, 3/25/2026, sale archives/ACSearch list just ONE other example that has come to sale or has come up for sale, the same coin twice actually, listed by Munz, sale 198, Lot 61, 4/19/2023 which went unsold and is in a poorer state of preservation than our specimenThis coin was issued very closely after the Roman victory over King Perseus at the Battle of Pydna, when the Roman Republic took control over the now former Kingdom of Macedonia and effectively ended the Hellenistic Age; the take over of Macedonia was a massive prestige booster for the Romans who, although they had defeated Carthage and has begun to take over the Mediterranean, were still seen by many Greeks/Hellenistic kingdoms/city states as barabarians; thus for the Romans to control the homeland of Alexander the Great, this was a very \'big deal\' at the time and the event which propelled the Romans further EastThe provenance of this coin is quite extensive for our modern age as well, with at least 3 previous \'owners\', 4 if you are to include me at Comitaus Coins: Forum Ancient Coins, London Ancient Coins, and the RBW Collection; it should be noted however that I am going on Forums word when disseminating the provenance of this coin and while I do have Forums attribution tag as well as a tag that I assume is from London Ancient Coins, I have no documentation associated with the RBW Collection, but as Forum is among the most reputable firms in existence at this time, I take them at their wordAll coins are authentic and from my own personal collection.
