The Rosso Sicilian is a striking, old-world Italian heirloom tomato that originated in the open-air markets of Sicily and was introduced to the United States in 1987. It is instantly recognizable by its heavily ribbed, costoluta shape, which resembles a small, flattened, bright-red pumpkin. When sliced horizontally, these deep ridges create a beautiful, flower-like pattern. Inside, the tomato features firm, dense flesh with a lower moisture content and natural, partially hollow cavities. Its thin skin and robust, tangy-sweet flavor make it highly sought after by home cooks and gardeners alike. Culinarilly, its unique anatomy makes it incredibly versatile, serving as an excellent base for rich, velvety sauces and a perfect candidate for roasting, drying, or stuffing with rice and cheese in traditional Palermo style. In the garden, the Rosso Sicilian is a vigorous, heavy-yielding, indeterminate or semi-determinate vine that grows 4 to 7 feet tall and matures in 75 to 90 days. Because the heavy clusters of fruit can easily weigh down the plant and the thin-skinned tomatoes bruise easily, they require sturdy staking, consistent watering to prevent splitting, and gentle handling during harvest.
