Authentic early 20th-century promotional still bank / registering coin bank manufactured by The Automatic Recording Safe Co. of Chicago, USA. This example is personalized for Merchants Co-operative Bank (also referred to as Merchants Cooperative Bank), located at 24 School Street, Boston, Massachusetts.
These compact metal “Traveling Teller” banks were distributed by savings banks and co-operative banks as customer premiums to encourage thrift. Coins of different denominations drop into separate internal compartments so the bank teller can quickly count and record deposits without sorting. Patents for the design date from 1904 onward (commonly marked April 26, 1904, July 4, 1905, and later dates).
