Small late 18th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary ***son aged 11 - 1886. There is thinning to the first few letters of Mary's surname and they have virtually disappeared. But there are the initials T.M to the left and right of the numbers in the upper section and the surname is short so could possibly be Mason. This little sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with four rows of alphabet letters, each underlined with a different example of border pattern with the numbers 1 through to 9 beneath the second row which has the earlier mentioned set of family initials at each end plus a diamond, and a heart at each end of the last row. The middle section of the linen contains the following two verses
Since Mary's name I bear may I be blestHer God my guard and great reward unto eternal rest~~~~~~~~~Have faith in Christ be sure. Let Christ by faith save theeIt is them alone that he will own when others damned be
The lower section of the linen is stitched with the words - Mary **son is my name and with my needle I wrought the same. February 10 In the 11 year of my age - with a trio of crowns around them, then the side edges are stitched with a meandering floral border with an exquisitely worked flower in each corner. The top and edges have a central crown with a floral swag to each side and the date of 1786 above the bottom edge crown.
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, very slightly darker in places. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is minor bleeding to some of the stitching in the verse plus the earlier mentioned thinning to Mary's name, less to the other words in that area and further thinning to the crown above. The sampler is contained within an early 20th century Hogarth style frame which is in good condition with somescratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age, a small old loss to the inner gilt detailing on the top inside edge and a very small old loss to all four outer corners.
Measures 9" x 14" (sight size) and 11 1/4" x 16 1/4" including the frame.
