Sit back and let me tell you a tale of the high seas.
The year was 1957 and it was a stormy all over the Gulf of Mexico.
A man who loved the sea like his own children had retired
from sailing as a fisherman and was now spending his days painting.
He loved ships since he was a young boy. His father was a fisherman
before him. He sat on his father's lap as he heard stories of pirates
and brigands roaming the seas and looting ships.His favorite story was about a tall, proud merchant ship that
was doing a cargo run between Nassau and Havana, when it was set upon by
two pirate ships racing at them as they sailed into a headwind.
The men knew they might be doomed but the captain kept his
wits and ordered the crew to reverse course and make a run for it.
The ship was poorly armed and had only six cannons.They had only a matter of perhaps ten minutes before the
ships would overtake them. But the captain was a very smart man.
He had read about Rome and the Roman army. He had
remembered how the Romans would feign flight so that the
pursuing army would chase them and break formation.
only to be slaughtered by the Romans.Even now, one of the two pirate ships was faster than the other
and gaining on their ship. The heavy cannons were mounted port
and starboard. They couldn't target the pursuing ship while running.
He ordered his men to wheel 3 cannons to the stern of the vessel
and blow a hole out in the back of the ship! They first thought he
had taken leave of his senses, but then they understood and obeyed.
With the first blast a 4 foot hole had been blasted through the wood.
"Fire on the nearest ship!" Shouted the captain with determination.
Without losing any speed to turn and fight they kept running - while
fighting. The 3 cannons were firing one after the other and were missing
the slender target of the approaching ship. But one shot got lucky!
It hit the bow of the pirate ship and it started taking on water!
The ship slowed and a second shot clearly struck the deck!The crew cheered as they watched the vessel's bow sunk under the waves and
the pirates jumped overboard. The second slower pirate ship slowed
to pick up the crew and the merchant ship got away - with a 4 foot
hole in the stern!On this stormy night he recalled the story and started painting
a wonderful ship riding the waves like a gull does the clouds.
He worked often on velvet and on this occasion he chose aqua velvet.
He loved this painting and put his heart and soul into each stroke
of his brush.The fisherman's son lived in another land, in a big city and far from
the sea. But he knew the story of the ship that "attacked itself to win."
and sold his art collection and the ship painting.Now the tale has changed hands again. And you can acquire
the brilliant ship that got away. It's breathtaking and conveys the excitement
