If you have seen this palm offered by Plant Delights in NC, THEY GOT THEIR SEEDS FROM ME. Sabal sp. \'DeFuniak Springs is a large, unidentified Sabal palm located in the town with the same name. Nobody is certain exactly what species it is, other than NOT Sabal palmetto. It hasn\'t grown much in the past 30 years. Some folks think it\'s a Sabal x brazoriensis, or possibly related to Sabal bermudana, but its identity may never actually be known. It has a thick, heavy trunk (like S. bermudana) and the crown more closely resembles Sabal minor var. louisiana or brazoriensis. Speculation is that it is a hybrid, possibly between S. minor and S. palmetto (which is actually what S. x brazoriensis is).
Germination of Sabal is pretty simple. Just give them some good bottom heat and keep the media moist and they should start popping in a few weeks. Some people start them in community pots outside in the spring and transplant later (don\'t wait too long to transplant or you\'ll have a tangled mess of roots that will not be fun to work with!!!).
