Delightful on your table! This matched pair of antique repoussé sterling silver salt and pepper shakers were likely created between 1903 and 1905 in Baltimore by one of America\'s most prestigious silversmiths, the Schofield Company (laterHerr-Schofield; AKA the Baltimore Silversmiths Manufacturing Company, later acquired by Kirk-Stieff). Their pattern is Baltimore Rose, a richly figured and tactilely appealing floral motif that marries the [[richness, density]] of Victorian styling with the naturalistic beauty of Art Nouveau. They are number 1028 in the Schofield Company design collection. Unusually, these have a sleek circle foot, rather than clawed feet commonly seen on the design, likely indicating that the feet were an expertly applied later addition.Marks
On bottom of both: marks were often lightly struck and partially removed by machine polishing; the remains of the three additional maker\'s marks appear on the bottom of both shakers. The three additional marks are a diamond with either a B or H in it, a circle with a lion\'s head in it, and a diamond with an uppercase-S in it. We believe due to the presence of similar Schofield shakers with clearer marks that the first of these marks is a B, indicating manufacture between 1903 and 1905. However, we do not guarantee the set\'s age, due to the poor visibility of the marks and the unusual foot.Measurements
Height: approx. 10cm / 3-7/8\" including lid
Width: approx. 5cm / 2\"
Metal weight: Solid sterling silver, no weighting, approx 143.6 gramsCondition
Good antique condition. Round feet may be an expert repair, and are level and strongly set. Tops fit tightly and do not loosen during normal use. Tops must be loosened with some effort due to the purpose-fit tightness, and rims may gap ~2mm from body on one side (see photos). Surface is in good condition overall, with light scratches as expected for their age and purpose of use. The artisan\'s tool marks are visible throughout. There is no sign of surface damage due to dip cleaning. They\'ve had a light cleaning while in our care, using museum standard methods and materials. Buyer is responsible for polishing.

The Intriguing History of the Schofield Company
The Schofield Company (later Heer-Schofield, then the Baltimore Silversmiths Manufacturing Company, later acquired by Kirk-Stieff) was a Baltimore silver company whose best-known pattern was the highly desirable Baltimore Rose. In 1891, at the age of 18, Frank Schofield became an apprentice at the Gorham Manufacturing Company, on of the giants of American silver. In 1899, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland, to work as a die cutter for the Baltimore Sterling Silver Company (BSSCo) under the great Charles Stieff. Four years later, in 1903, he foundedthe Baltimore Silversmiths Manufacturing Company, and his first pattern was Baltimore Rose. His wife, Berthe, a former trapeze artist and bareback trick rider, also became a silversmith. She took over the company after Frank\'s death in 1947 and ran it until 1965, remaining on staff as a silversmith until it was acquired by the Stieff Company (later Kirk-Stieff) in 1967.
