Description

Thomas R. Harrison was called to active duty in June 1941 and assigned to the Philippine Department only months before the Japanese invasion. His memoir follows the campaign from the beach defenses through the retreat into Bataan, the surrender, the Death March, the camps at O\'Donnell and Cabanatuan, transport aboard a Japanese hell ship, and forced labor as a steelworker in Japan. After liberation he returned to Utah, earned his Mining Engineering degree at night, spent 22 years with Hercules Incorporated as Superintendent of Mechanical Design, and served as Chairman of the Utah State Board of Pardons. He died in Salt Lake City in 2013.

The book was issued privately by the author and distributed through Western Epics of Salt Lake City, so it had a limited regional circulation compared to trade published POW memoirs. Seventeen chapters plus foreword, acknowledgments, and epilogue.

Provenance: Inscribed by the author in black ink on the title page, \"To our old friend Margie Baum with our best wishes, Thomas R Harrison.\" The \"our\" suggests the inscription was made on behalf of Harrison and his wife Dorothy, a personal touch that reflects a longstanding friendship.

Bound in green textured cloth with gilt titling on the spine and gilt \"SURVIVOR\" on the front board. Pictorial dust jacket illustrated with an artillery piece mounted on a flatbed truck in the Bataan jungle; rear panel carries a color photograph of the author.

Condition

Binding and Structure: Tight and square. Hinges sound. No loose pages.

Spine: Green cloth with bright, fully legible gilt lettering. Light rubbing at the tail.

Boards: Clean green cloth. Tail corners bumped with light fraying of the cloth at the bottom edge. No stains or soiling.

Dustjacket: Present, glossy and bright with strong color. Chipping and short tears along the head and tail of the front spine fold, with a small piece of loss at the top edge near the spine. Light edge wear and minor soiling to the rear panel. Spine panel lettering intact and unfaded.

Pages and Interior: Clean, bright white pages with no writing or markings other than the inscription. Page edges clean. Ink from the inscription shows faintly through to the copyright page.

Ephemera and Inserts: None.

Overall Condition Grade: Very Good in a Good+ dust jacket.
