An attractive late-Victorian illustrated edition of the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, issued in a striking publisher’s decorative cloth binding. Bound in blue cloth with a vivid polychrome floral design in red, yellow, green and black across the front board and spine, with POE prominently lettered in gilt panels. An especially appealing example of Victorian decorative book design.
The volume collects Poe’s celebrated poetry, including “The Raven,” “Lenore,” “The Bells,” “Annabel Lee,” “Ulalume,” “The Haunted Palace,” “Eldorado,” “A Dream Within a Dream,” “To Helen,” “To One in Paradise,” “The City in the Sea,” and “Tamerlane,” together with the important critical essays “The Poetic Principle” and “The Philosophy of Composition.” Also includes a critical memoir and an analysis of The Raven.
Profusely illustrated throughout with atmospheric black-and-white engravings by John Tenniel, Birket Foster, Percival Skelton, and others, including numerous substantial illustrations accompanying the poems. Particularly effective are the Gothic illustrations for The Raven, Lenore, and The Bells. Pages are framed throughout by decorative red rules and corner ornaments.
Condition: Good to Very Good. Binding remains sound and visually striking, with rubbing and wear to the extremities, particularly the corners and spine ends, some loss and fading to the spine decoration, and minor general shelf wear. Text block and page edges considerably age-toned, with occasional spotting and handling marks consistent with age. Interior illustrations remain clean, dark and attractive. Hinges are sound & intact. A wonderfully decorative 19th-century Poe with considerable shelf presence and strong appeal to collectors of Poe, Victorian literature, and decorative publisher’s bindings.
