Vintage 1981 FSG Hardcover — Marguerite Yourcenar \"The Abyss\" Literary Masterpiece - The Volume: A beautifully preserved, collector-grade vintage 1981 hardcover edition of the monumental historical masterpiece The Abyss by legendary author and first female Académie Française member Marguerite Yourcenar. Authenticated as the premium 1981 FSG Third Printing of the True First US Edition text, masterfully translated from the original French L\'Œuvre au Noir by Grace Frick. Natively published in New York by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (HB ISBN: 0-374-10050-3). Designed by Cynthia Krupat and housed in its original, highly evocative pictorial dust jacket.
- The Significance: A dense, philosophical and critically acclaimed tour de force tracing the life of Zeno—a sixteenth-century alchemist, philosopher, and physician navigating the volatile, dangerous religious upheavals of Renaissance Europe.
- Condition Report (Gallery Grade): Excellent vintage condition. The original deep brown cloth-bound casing underneath remains remarkably firm, tight, and razor-square with brilliant gold spine typography. The outer graphic dust jacket is flat and exceptionally bright, displaying only honest, minor uniform light shelf handling edge wear appropriate for an authentic 45-year-old volume. Internal 346-page text block is pristine: heavy-gauge sheets are flat, securely bound, and completely sterile—100% free of reader text underscores, highlights, library stamps, or dog-ears.
