The Jewish Peace Book for Home and School, by Abraham Cronbach, D.D., Professor of Social Studies at Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati. Published 1932 by the Department of Synagogue and School Extension of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, confirmed first edition via the title and copyright pages. Dedicated to the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, whose request prompted its production.
Cronbach (1882–1965) was one of the genuinely important figures in American Jewish pacifism — a Reform rabbi, HUC professor, co-founder of the Peace Heroes Memorial Society, and co-founder of the Jewish Peace Fellowship. This book gathers peace stories for Jewish children, classroom material, and devotions and prayers for peace, several of which are still cited today by scholars of Jewish liturgy and the interwar peace movement.
Green cloth boards, gilt title lettering, and a striking blind/gilt-stamped emblem of a dove within a triangle on the front board. A lovely period gift inscription appears on the front free endpaper: \"To Judy and Robert — May your family grow up in a World of Peace. Fondly, The Slaters, June 1961\" — a sweet, dated piece of mid-century provenance from a private family, not the author\'s signature.
Condition: Good+. A stain near the spine head on the front board, and the spine cloth has toned/browned at the top — both visible in photos. Text complete, clean, and legible throughout; boards firmly attached. A genuinely scarce title — most surviving copies turn up in library/institutional holdings rather than the open market.
