**AN EXTREMELY RARE REVERSE FROM RARE CITY**
An extremely rare reverse type from the equally rare city of Osca, located in Hispania Terraconesis; the reverse legend is among the last of the old Republican types, featuring the names of the Duovirii Marcus Aelius Maxumus and Quintus Aelius Proculus, who appear to have either been brothers or from the same familia; a duovir was the essentially a small scale Roman consul, elected for just one year in the same manner, this was the highest local magistracy one could attain other than Censor; according to RPC, there are just 15 examples of this reverse type known, with only four of these in the ‘core collections’, with sale archives/ACSearch listing only THREE sales in the past two decades, the most recent of which was Numismatik Naumann, sale 98, Lot 460, 1/03/2021, which sold for $160, however that is the plate coin for RPC I 292, ours being a budget example
I have tried to show the details of the reverse as best I can, as with this example one must turn it almost onto its side to be able to read the inscription; the obverse is quite worn but the portrait of Tiberius is unmistakable; it is possible that this coin can be cleaned, though I have not allowed to mark it as \'uncleaned\'; this specimen has a very thick patina that COULD be removed if you wish, to see the details more clearly, but I would use extreme caution so as to not get down to the bare, base metal and ruin a rare coin!
RPC lists only 11 entries for Tiberius from Osca and indeed it would appear that coins were only issued from Osca for the first three Augusti: Augustus Caesar, Tiberius Caesar and everyone\'s favorite Caesar, Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus, better known as Caligula
