Historical Context:
The 1857–1861 Benjamin Franklin one-cent issue belongs to an important period of early American postal development. These classic engraved stamps were introduced during the expansion of prepaid postage and perforated stamp production in the United States.
One-cent stamps of this period were commonly used for newspapers, circulars, and certain local postal services.
The different engraved types and postal cancellations offer an interesting field of study for collectors specializing in nineteenth-century United States philately.
Condition:
IMPORTANT – USED CLASSIC STAMP WITH VISIBLE FAULTS.
This example shows substantial age-related wear and deterioration, including significant brownish discoloration, staining, uneven perforations, edge damage, and possible paper thinning.
The reverse displays extensive toning and a small light-colored spot that may indicate thinning or a pinhole. The exact nature of this defect has not been verified.
The upper and lower edges show irregular or shortened perforations.
The cancellation is a particularly interesting feature of this example.
A prominent rounded marking appears across Franklin\'s portrait, accompanied by additional dark postal impressions toward the right side.
A Boston postal cancellation is a possibility, but there are insufficient readable characters to confirm the originating post office or the use of a circular date stamp.
No repairs, alterations, reperforation, or other possible modifications have been independently ruled out.
Please examine all photographs carefully before purchasing.
Catalog & Identification Notice:
This stamp appears consistent with the 1857–1861 Benjamin Franklin one-cent blue issue, potentially Scott #24, Type V.
However, precise identification of the engraving type requires detailed inspection of the ornamental design, perforations, and other characteristics.
The suggested Boston postal marking is a visual hypothesis only, not a confirmed postal identification.
Catalog number, printing variety, exact cancellation, and authenticity are not guaranteed. Buyer should verify.
No expert certificate is included.
This collectible is offered strictly as shown.
