Offered for sale is a fine late 19th to early 20th century hand sculpted( engraved) black and white banded Sardonyx agate cameo portrait of an Ancient Greek woman. This portrait bears a very strong resemblance to how the Ancient Greek poetess Sappho was sometimes portrayed in antiquity, the bound up hair and serene expression. This style portrait of Sappho was also popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. This cameo is well executed in fine detail. It measures approximately 22mm in diameter. The black contrasting layer of this cameo has been left purposefully in a mat surface. The cameo is in a wonderful state of preservation with only a tiny chip to the bottom of the neck.
