One of Sweden\'s most beloved reference works. \"Uppfinningarnas Bok\" — literally \"The Book of Inventions\" — was Sweden\'s answer to the great illustrated encyclopedias of the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
It\'s a Swedish adaptation and expansion of Friedrich Georg Wieck\'s monumental German work \"Das Buch der Erfindungen,\" translated and republished in Sweden through multiple editions from the 1870s into the early 1900s.
This appears to be the later single-volume consolidated edition, 648 pages, and it\'s packed wall to wall with detailed engraved illustrations of machinery, tools, transportation, manufacturing, and industry — including a wonderful spread of early bicycle designs (labeled \"velociped\") and industrial sawing and grinding machines.
The cover is the real showstopper here — deep burgundy embossed cloth with a dramatic full-panel gilt angel figure (a classical allegory of Progress or Industry) set against a richly patterned floral ground. The spine carries additional gilt decoration and the title in gold lettering.
The back cover has a blind-stamped figural medallion. This is exactly the kind of Victorian presentation binding that decorators and prop stylists pay real money for, and the junk journal and ephemera community has gone absolutely wild for books with engravings like these. Pages photograph beautifully.
There are drilled holes through the text block — visible in the photos — which affect the interior pages. The cover itself reads well and the drilling is barely perceptible from the front. Perfect for display, junk journaling, ephemera harvesting, or a serious collector who wants it as-is.
