VTG Richard Bergquist Monk San Pasquale Saint of Kitchen Clay Art figure 6.5” For Sale

Vintage Richard Bergquist San e Santo Clay Figurine - Southwest Folk Art 6.5”I found this charming , handcrafted Native clay \"Santo\" (Saint) figurine depicting San Pasqual, Patron Saint of Cooking/Kitchen holding a detailed woven basket (made of clay as well) and knew it must be special.I would learn this piece was made by beloved Arizona folk artist Richard Bergquist. Found in Arizona , the state where he practiced his unique craft. This figure was originally part of a larger mounted wall retablo scene but was found alone,removed from its original wooden plaque background.Because of this, there is clear (non-sticky) rubber adhesive residue on the bottom base where it was originally attached (please see photos). I am leaving it in as it serves as a natural protector to furniture. But it could be removed easily. Sadly, there is no signature on the figure itself, as the artist traditionally signed the wooden backs of the plaques instead of the clay figures. The clay monk itself is in beautiful condition with no chips or cracks to the body, face, or basket. The detail on the basket is wonderful, you can even see the image of an Aztec type man figure on it. Love the expression on the monk’s face! Without the original wood plaque and accessories, in my mind - it allows the focal art figure to shine, simply, and as a stand alone figure or part of a vignette, this saint of the kitchen seems perfect to me, as is. A wonderful, authentic piece of regional Southwestern folk art perfect for a kitchen display or a Bergquist collector! Adding a happy blessing to anyone who loves to cook!
